Learn Mandarin Chinese

Speaking basic Mandarin Chinese will open doors closed to you now.  Saying “Thank you!” or “It’s nice meeting you” shows an effort to connect. That’s a big deal if you are making friends or doing business.  It’s an even bigger deal living or working in China.

It’s Not That Hard.

Anything worth doing is going to take some effort, but learning Mandarin is not that hard.  You just have to work at it. The tones are a little difficult for the western ear, but the context of the conversation helps you figure out the meaning 99% of the time. You do not need to learn to read and write to be effective in China.

I found very quickly that, even with the most rudimentary Mandarin skills, my understanding of culture, custom and conversation, and my relationships with friends and partners in China improved exponentially. – Geoff O’Keeffe, American Recreation Products

Understand Chinese Culture

Just knowing how to speak is like shooting a gun without aiming.  With a lot of luck, you might hit the target, but you are probably going to shoot yourself in the foot. Knowing the culture will help you not say the wrong thing and insult an important business partner.  It will help you give the right gift at the right time and understand when to say thanks and when to fight for the check.

Travel in China Confidently and Effectively

Traveling to any country for business or pleasure is simply unproductive if you are unable to connect with local people.  It is easy to feel left out and disconnected. Many end up watching movies in their hotel room or on a bus with 50 other tourists.  Spend time with the right people at the local tea house that no one else knows about. Make meaningful connections while others sit in the hotel bar.
